Al Maktoum International Airport
In line with Dubai’s expanding presence on the global stage, and growing importance as a prime destination for tourism, commerce and investment, the emirate has allocated $35 billion to create the world’s largest airport.
Occupying a site of more than 70 square kilometres the new Al Maktoum International Airport will significantly increase transit capacity in Dubai, after analysis revealed that the present airport would soon be unable to match demand.
Once complete, the airport will have five parallel runways, four concourses, over 400 gates, retail, dining and entertainment spaces and advanced in-airport systems and technology to smooth passenger transfers and onward transportation. The airport will also offer more than 6,000 parking spaces and have its own metro station.
A focal point for aviation innovation on an international scale, the airport design also incorporates a multi-modal cargo hub for air, land and sea freight. Confirming that the project will be completed within this decade, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said: “We are building a new project for future generations, ensuring continuous and stable development for our children and their children in turn.
“Dubai will be the world’s airport, its port, its urban hub and its new global centre.”
Such is the scale of development; the airport is projected to contribute 15 per cent of Dubai’s forecasted GDP by 2030.
